Goal Setting 101: Identifying What to Tackle First

As a habit and transformation coach, it's important to figure out the best way to effectuate ACTUAL CHANGE for my clients and myself.


I'm a paying NOOM subscriber* and love how they combine neuroscience and psychology to help us observe and change our eating habits. A #PsychTrick they shared with me on how to select what healthy eating and fitness goals to set resonated in that it can help us in all aspects of our lives, especially as we set our intentions for 2021.


The acronym they use is 321 ILL and the concept is as follows:

  • 3 Important: Identify 3 challenges that feel important for you to address right now

    • Ask yourself: What's hard right now? What's making it difficult to stick to my {calorie budget, financial budget, personal goals, or business goals}? If I had 3 wishes to change things in my control, what would they be?

  • 2 Long Term: Narrow down the 3 challenges you've identified to 2 challenges that are most important to reach your long-term goals

    • Ask yourself: How do these challenges get in the way of "my big picture" right now? How will working on this challenge help today and a month down the line?

  • 1 Low Stress: Starting a new journey can add enough stress to your life. While your goals should be somewhat challenging, the last thing they should be is stressful. Of the two challenges you've narrowed down, identify the one that adds the LEAST stress to your life. That's your PRIMARY goal!

As I learned in the Intention Setting Workshop Party** I hosted via Zoom this weekend, there are many facets of our life that are important. While it can seem overwhelming to start setting intentions and goals for the New Year.


My beloved Magic of I 2020 Astrological Planner lists EIGHT AREAS OF LIFE in which to set intentions:


Spiritual ~ expansion, soul, being

Mental ~ mind, learning, wisdom Work ~ career, contribution, service

Love ~ family, relationships, connection Money ~ financial wealth, income goals Social ~ connection, community, fun Physical ~ health, fitness, well-being Inspiration ~ travel, creativity, adventure


You should focus on two columns for each of the areas: What I Would Like + Actionable Steps so you can

co-create with the universe as you actively & intentionally work towards your life's biggest dreams.


From there, choose the five most important intentions for the year and label it your Magic 5 Dream List.


At first glance I was intimidated by the work but now that I have the NOOM #PsychTrick 321 ILL I know I can select the top three areas of the eight that feel most important for my next 6-12 months and craft a plan to attack my weaker areas of achievement and go from there. YAY!
